Hi All:
Well, I'm a fair way into my new found pleasure now, and I'm enjoying it greatly.
I've noticed in the last few weeks that the Perdomo Humidification System (small: 50-70 cigar) I have is really becoming quite thirsty, and needs to be charged up again with Distilled Water at least once a week. Now I know that Sydney has had some crap weather of late - could this be causing this issue or is there something else that I may have not thought of or overlooked. I've had it for about 4 months - Does it need replacing?
By the way, I've gotta say a big shout out to Cameron at Perdomo. Really helpful with my first and subsequent purchases and I've found myself a massive fan of the Perdomo range.
Thanks ahead for your comments in reply !

Permalink Reply by Simon Larsen on January 25, 2012 at 4:12pm Sydney has been insanely humid for the past few weeks. If you are chewing water now either you didn't prep the humidor (and it will fix itself so long as you keep feeding it water) or your cigars are insanely dry (but will kind of fix themselves if you keep feeding water) or there is something way over the top wrong with your setup.
Are you using straight water or do you have it mixed with a solution? What does your hygro say and have you calibrated it?
Most of all how do the cigars smoke? Do they keep going out even with reasonable attention (say a decent puff every minute or so) and have no real smoke to them (although different brands / vitolas etc affect this).

Permalink Reply by SirenJockey on January 25, 2012 at 6:06pm My set-up was pretty simple really. Had Perdomo deliver the Starter Humidor & Sampler set, followed the instructions to charge the humidification disc and placed it in the humidor and sat back and waited. Had the first cigar about 2 weeks from receiving it, and I've had about 5 more since then.
Perdomo were out of the hygrometers at the time, and I'm still awaiting one on back order. That's something I'll have to chase up as well. I'm awaiting the usual face-palm that will come telling me that because I dont have a Hygro, that's probaly the main issue.
The smoke, to my layman opinion is fine. The cigars aren't brittle at all, they have a great flavour from my limited taste knowledge so far. They don't need to much of a retouch at all I must say, only when I walk away to go inside or something else does it go out.
They have a small amount of smoke on letting it rest in the cigar ash tray that can be seen, and when they are smoked I tend to get a nice amount of smoke - nothing that says the cigars are being harmed - for the moment.
I simply make it my Friday ritual to fill'er'up and charge it with simply Distilled Water. Nothing else. Literally the disc is the only thing besides cigars thats in the humidor.
I'm thinking that Benjamin's comment may be more on the mark in my case at the moment. I've read the site description and it may be that the amount of cigars I have may be too great for it to handle. In that case I'll simply order another one if need be.

Permalink Reply by Hasan Sheriff on January 25, 2012 at 7:18pm One word is synonymous with accuracy. That word is Boveda.
Open the packet, throw it in the humi and forget about your RH issues. It really is that simple.
I'm going to be travelling overseas for 3 weeks soon and all I'm taking is a large Lock&Lock and 3 Boveda packs (I could do with 2, but 3 gives a quicker recovery (up or down) after opening the box). It's such a simple system to use. They're so accurate that you can use them to calibrate your hygro.
I just got some in today from eBay (I prefer Amazon but those vendors don't ship it to Aus) here:

I paid $32 for 6 packs shipped. Damn good deal.
Good luck!

Permalink Reply by Stephen Logan on January 26, 2012 at 12:47am Guys I am new to the world also and have only been smoking for about a year, but I have learnt a little along the way. Most of what I say is suck eggs stuff so please dont be offended as I required help when I bought my first humidor. Straight up I got a cloth and wet the inside of the himidor with distilled, then I left a shot glass full of distiled water in the Humidor for a week. It was difficult as I just wanted to put my cigars in. I live in Darwin and we get 99% humidity so I keep the Humi at 60% I find my Cubans smoke best this way. I have not had to put any more distilled water in there and it has worked extremely well. I bought a 400 count humidor which is my pic. It was quite cheap considering I bought it from Germany and they shipped it.
Another very important consideration is to ensure it seals properly. To check this open the lid then let it drop. If it makes a bang then it is not sealing it should make a shhh sound, as in stop before it bangs shut.
I hope this helps and I have not offended, I utilise Gel pads from the coy I bought the Humidor from, but again I have heard Boveda are magnificent. I do have some which I will try when my pads are finished.

The humidification puck shouldn't need replacing. The usual reason they dry out too quickly is that the humidor is absorbing the moisture. However that's normally a scenario I'd expect with a brand new humidor that hasn't been seasoned. Our starter packs are obviously empty boxes that have usually been sitting open in our walk-in humidor for a month or more and are therefore usually pretty well seasoned before we ship them. Depending on where you've been keeping it in the house (e.g. how hot or dry the room is) and how often you open it, the cedar in the box may have dried out a little and is therefore absorbing the moisture from the puck too quickly. My recommendation would be to get a Boveda seasoning pack (we're currently waiting on more coming in) or a small bowl of distilled water and leave it in the box (without cigars in it) for a couple of weeks.
BTW, we just (finally!) got more hygrometers in - I'll make sure you we ship you one tomorrow!
Feel free to give me a call or email if you have any further questions about the humidor issue. And Happy Australia Day everyone! We've got a bunch of people coming into the Perdomo Lounge in Brisbane around midday to celebrate over a few sticks. Hope you're all doing something similar!
cheers

Permalink Reply by SirenJockey on January 26, 2012 at 12:50pm Hi guys,
Happy Australia Day!!! Just to set things straight, the printing on the side of the box of the Perdomo Humidifiers is incorrect. When Perdomo had the packaging made last year, the same text went on every box (small, medium and large). The site charts shown on our website are correct for the number of cigars ideal for each humidifier. My only explanation for the repeated filling of the device would be a that the humidor may be in a dry place or it is absorbing a large amount of moisture and may need to be re-seasoned. Typically (as we have found through our own research and that of our customers in the past 12 months) the devices simply need to be checked and topped up about once a month if used under the perfect conditions. Alternatively, it may also be a faulty product. Not sure how they could become faulty, but I will ask the question. We have sold about 300 of the small ones in the past 12 months, with no negative feedback until this thread.
As Cameron has mentioned, we do also stock the full Boveda range of humidipaks, seasoners and calibrators. We don't have the humidipaks on our website as at this stage, we only use them for putting in overseas customer orders, but if anyone is looking for some, we can certainly put them up on our site. We currently have 68% and 72% packs in stock at about $4.00 each
Secondly, the starter packs are simply that, a starter pack consisting of an old cigar box. The box makes a perfect start to a new cigar smoker (particularly as they are supplied free of charge in the pack) for a short period of time, but extended use is not ideal. Once someone becomes a seasoned smokers, they should certainly look into upgrading to a proper humidor.
Hope this helps....

Permalink Reply by SirenJockey on January 26, 2012 at 6:07pm Thanks Jason - Happy Australia Day to you all as well !
I'm still shopping around for the 'right' humidor at the moment - and with the Public Holiday pay from Xmas and New Years, coupled with some overtime, the humidor hunting is well and truly underway. I've gotta say, even for a starter box, the Perdomo one is sensational.
I don't think your product failed to be honest - I think more that I haven't taken the right approach in being vigilant watching over the last few weeks since first noticing it. The weather in Sydney presumably hasn't helped either. I'm more then happy to purchase a few of the Boveda packs off your site - if you let me know how I'll get straight on it.
I've gotta say that I am absolutely stoked with the service, support an knowledge provided by both Cameron and Jason, as well as the regular posters on this forum. On Australia Day of all days its great to see two blokes willing to help a rookie out and give some great advice, and I'm more then happy to continue supporting your business.
Thanks for all your advice as well forum posters !!!! Much appreciated.
